The Lisbon University Stadium (EULisboa) celebrated its 70th anniversary on May 27th with a commemorative session that brought together members of the academic community, institutional representatives, and entities linked to university and national sports.
Lisbon University Stadium Celebrates 70 Years with Commemorative Session
The ceremony took place at Athletics Track No. 2 of the Lisbon University Stadium and was attended by the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Luís Ferreira, and the President of the Lisbon University Stadium, João Roquette.
The session began with a reception for the guests, accompanied by performances from academic music groups, followed by moments of sporting and cultural demonstrations, with exhibitions of Jogo do Pau (a traditional Brazilian game) and Capoeira.
The event included the presentation of a new commemorative video for the 70th anniversary of the Lisbon University Stadium, a piece evocative of its history, identity, and impact over seven decades in service of university sports.
During the ceremony, the new website for the University Stadium of Lisbon was also presented, a revamped platform that aims to strengthen ties with the academic community and improve access to information and services provided by the institution.
Another central moment of the session was the resumption of the awarding of the University of Lisbon Sports Merit Prizes, a distinction that recognizes student-athletes who manage to reconcile academic rigor with high-level athletic performance. Although it was not possible to award the scholarships to all the distinguished student-athletes on this occasion, the moment served to publicly acknowledge their achievement, especially those who won medals in international university sports competitions in the 2024/2025 academic year. The distinguished student-athletes Manuel Martinho and Margarida Brás, represented by Rodrigo Morais, took to the stage.
It was also mentioned that a specific ceremony dedicated to the formal awarding of the Sports Merit Scholarships will be organized soon, allowing all the distinguished student-athletes to receive due individual recognition. During the session, the names of all the award winners were projected, in a collective tribute to the merit, dedication, and commitment of the students of the University of Lisbon.
The celebration was also marked by the announcement that the University Stadium of Lisbon will host the first European University Athletics Championship in August 2027. The event is the result of an application by the Portuguese University Sports Federation (FADU) to the European University Sports Association (EUSA). ULisboa and the Portuguese Athletics Federation are partners of FADU in organizing this event. In this context, a cooperation protocol will be signed between the institutions involved, which will not only frame this event but also lay the foundations for collaboration in the development of athletics practice in the university context.
These celebrations included a speech by João Roquette, President of the University Stadium of Lisbon, at the opening ceremony. During the presentation of the Sports Merit Scholarships for the 2024/2025 academic year, the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Luís Ferreira, and the Vice-Rector, Luís Castro, took to the stage to present the scholarships. Also taking part in the announcement of the 1st European University Athletics Championship were the President of the Portuguese Athletics Federation, Domingos Castro, and the 1st Vice-President of the Portuguese University Sports Federation (FADU), Tomás Nascimento, who delivered brief speeches.
The celebration of the 70th anniversary of the University Stadium of Lisbon highlighted the historical role of EULisboa in promoting sports, health, and well-being within the academic community, as well as its contribution to the development of university sports in Portugal.
In parallel with the official celebrations, the University Stadium of Lisbon also promoted an Open Week, between May 25th and 29th, which included, on May 27th, an Open Day with sporting activities, health and well-being initiatives, and opportunities to try out different sports aimed at the academic community and users of the Stadium.
